The Unicode Emoji Subcommittee of the Unicode Consortium has released the latest batch of official emojis. The Unicode Consortium is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization with a focus on making modern software and computing systems support the widest range of human languages.
Here’s a sneak peek of some of those emojis that you will see coming soon to your devices (from emojipedia):
All the emojis on the second and third rows come in six different skin tones; the first six images on line two. the six skin tones.
My favorites are the following:
- row one, first item – a melting face
- row three, second and third items – a pregnant man…
- row four, first item – a troll
- row four, next to last item – a playground slide
- row five, item two – a hamsa (Depicting the open right hand, an image recognized and used as a sign of protection in many times throughout history, the hamsa is believed by middle easterners, to provide defense against the evil eye. The hamsa holds recognition as a bearer of good fortune among Christians in the Middle East as well.)
The Unicode Consortium website also provides info about which emojis are used most often, as shown in the following pie chart. The cahrt identifies the six most popular, and then frequency usages for a random selection of oether emojis.
And did you know, that if you are a really big fan of a particular emoji, you can adopt it, at a price from $100 to $5,000, depending on your level of sponsorship. Adopting a character helps the non-profit Unicode Consortium in its goal to support the world’s languages.
And I want to give a shout out to the following, which according to the Twitter site, Least Used Emoji, is the world’s least-used emoji:
It is the input symbol for symbols.
Who knew there was so much to know about the humble emoji…

It’s an emoji of a face wearing a flesh-colored Covid mask.

at least it’s not the transparent kind of mask…

I agree. some of the emojis are quite hard to figure out what they represent. As a result, I tend to use the same three or four emohis over and over 🙂

You mean there is still not a …smacking your head… emoji!

that was the first thing I looked for. I think you can submit an emoji for consideration. How cool would that be?!

I can’t get over the pregnant men! 😂 I browsed through my emoji’s and didn’t see any pregnant women….I’m not always up on the latest trends but i definitely missed this one! 😂

I have no idea why they would need a pregnant man emoji…

I get confused by emojis. The pregnant men I thought were just fat. The emoji I like best is the second one in row 5 coral, I think.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I also find most emojis confusing. I don’t know what the purpose of the pregnant man is. ANd you re correct about the coral. That is one I never would have guessed…

Too bad we can’t chart our own emojis. That way you could assess which emojis got the best blog responses. I’m sure that study has already been done somewhere. I know there are 2-3 I use 90% of the time. Many I have never used. If I can’t figure out what they mean, I don’t use them.

I am the same way. I tend to use three or four emojis the vast majority of time. And as you and others have noted, many emojis I have no idea what they represent…

I had to check and there it is…Pregnant Woman was approved as part of Unicode 9.0 in 2016 and added to Emoji 3.0 in 2016…
LikeLiked by 1 person
thanks for checking; I would have guessed that a pregnant woman would have been an emoji even earlier than that. But a pregnant man???

All writing will eventually be replaced by emojis, a universal language. We will come full circle to the days we made pictures on cave walls.

I wish I could respond with emojis, Brad, but I have not figured that out on WP! It took me long enough to find them for emails and texts.

I love the ogre and have been considering how to use the 3 beans. maybe- I don’t give (3 beans) about what you said/did/think. use as needed. or maybe there is totally a different meaning to this emoji?

Cool beans?

that could be!

the ogre is a good one. I hadn’t thought about the three beans, but I assume you are using it in the right context…

I still text in full sentences. By all means, let’s give kids more symbols so they can use even fewer words. I can’t even fathom why we’d even need some of those. Dotted line face? For what? (And that’s the nicest one I’ll complain about.)

I get by with about 4 emojis; I don’t even know what some of them mean. but yes, talk about dumbing things down…

Do people really get paid to create and study emojis? Tandem who’s to say that what looks like a pregnant man isn’t actually a man who likes his beer. Sorry I really don’t get the whole emoji thing and rarely use them. When I do use them I am likely using them wrong. I like to communicate in complete sentences. Less misunderstandings.

I don’t know if people are getting paid to keep track of emojis or if it is a labor of love. And good point about the pregnant man; if I wasn’t told what it was, I would have thought the same thing. And I use emojis, but just about three or four of them. Hopefully they will never fully replace the written word. Can you imagine reading a book that is just emojis?!

It would need to be open to interpretation.

maybe I should write a poem with a bunch of random emojis and then sit back and watch people try to interpret it… 🙂

that’s odd. when I look at your comment in the WP reader, there is a fourth emoji that looks like a blue circle with two stars on it. when I look at it on my blog, I just see three emojis…

I’ve no idea where the fourth one comes from, I only typed three! No particular significance- I just like them 🤣

I love emojis, if I could communicate only in emojis I would! Wouldn’t pay to adopt it lol but I’d continue using it 🙌 my fave in your list is the “I can’t watch but oh let me watch” emoji LOL

that emoji is a good one as well; and I have no desire to sponsor an emoji either…

I only use emojis because other people seem to like them. I’m much more comfortable with 1990s era emoticons 🙂

While I don’t use Emojis too often, my wife will be excited to see some new ones. I did like the “troll,” who gets my vote for the #1 new Emoji!
