I’ve been a teacher for over 35 years, and I’ll be the first to admit that there is no way I could ever give a talk as good as the TED Talk that seven-year-old Molly Wright just gave.
That’s right, seven years old.
Molly’s talk focused on what adults can do to help children “thrive by five”.
- Connecting
- Talking
- Playing
- A healthy home
- Community.
Molly points out that interactions early and often matter: “Take it from me, the seven-year-old up here talking about brain science.“
Molly also shows how interactions and connections can be disrupted when an adult starts using an electronic device, such as a phone.
But enough from me; here’s Molly’s wonderful seven-minute TED Talk:
What an incredible person this girl is! I have no words.

agreed, and for any age, not just a 7-year old…

That’s why I didn’t specify. She is simply an amazing public speaker. she should become an instructor. She’s 7 but she’d be a great psych teacher. Keep the class engaged. But again, she’s 7 – she may want to become the next Elon Musk. Let her. Rock on girlie-girl!

It was very effective to have a seven year old make the presentation. Great points for parenting, and it proves I’m not smarter than a third grader.

they found a good spokesperson…
and when I was seven, I was happy if I put my shoes on my left and right foot correctly…

Having taught many seven and eight-year-olds over the years, very few are this confident and poised. I’m inquisitive about how long it took her to feel this comfortable in front of an audience. She’s a testament to how good public speaking is for children.

Am I the only one who finds this kind of adult-mimicry unsettling? “Thrive By Five”? As if there’s a throng of five year olds who are just not living life to their expected potential? It’s seems like the intellectual equivalent of trotting them out for a beauty pageant. {{{shudder}}}

I’m not a fan of beauty pageants eitehr, but I agree with the message of the importance of engaging with children, particularly when they are young and their brains are developing so quickly…

I would want a guarantee that my kid turned out as confident and poised as Molly. However I think she is a rarity. Most of us do the best we can and hope for the best.
