Music Monday: 13 Songs to Accompany Graduation

I guess I’ll continue with the theme from the past couple of days – college graduation. And since it’s Monday, that means music related to graduation.

The classic song is Sir Edward Elgar: “Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 In D”. The part most people (well at least me) are probably familiar with starts at about two minutes in this video:

The other songs in this list were found by searching Google for graduation songs, and then picking out ones I’m familiar with, as well as ones I’ve never heard before, but seemed to be on multiple “best graduation songs” lists.

Lee Ann Womack: “I Hope You Dance”. Despite dancing not being one of my favorite things to do, I do love this song.

Miley Cyrus, “The Climb” – this is one I’ve never heard of, but the reviews of it convinced me to include it here.

Joan Baez, “Forever Young” – one of my all-time favorite songs.

The Wonder Years, “My Last Semester” – another song I’ve never heard of, but it’s got the word semester in it…

Green Day, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” – reminds me more of Seinfeld, but I can see the graduation link as well.

Sarah McLachlan, “I Will Remember You”

Vitamin C, “Graduation (Friends Forever)” – another one I never heard of, but it was on multiple lists. Seems more geared towards high school graduation.

Katy Perry “Firework” – any excuse to get this song on one of my blog posts; it has over one billion views…

Beach Boys, “Graduation Day” – I don’t think I’ve heard this Beach Boys song.

Billy Joel, “Vienna”: – one of my favorite Billy Joel songs, but I never thought of it as a graduation song, but it was on multiple lists.

Rembrandts: “I’ll Be There for You” – think Friends!

Idina Menzel: “Defying Gravity” from ‘Wicked” – one of my favorite Broadway songs. Not sure I would have thought of it as a graduation song, but somebody did, so I’ll include it too.
