The following blurb from the Metro UK newspaper caught my eye the other day:
“A French baker has been fined £2,600 for ‘working too hard’ by selling bread every day. Cedric Vaivre, 41, broke labour laws in Lusigny-sur-Barse by not having a rest day.”
That seems like such a foreign concept, both literally and figuratively, to penalize someone for working too hard.
I think a lot of people in the U.S. actually take pride in “working too hard”, but I think there’s a lot to be said for having a nice balance between work/non-work.
And if such a balance needs to be mandated by law, then so be it.
I’m not sure such a law would pass muster in the U.S., but I would certainly support it. But I think it should go further – requiring at least two rest days per week.
But there is one caveat – all the bakeries near me must coordinate their schedules so as to ensure that they are providing baked goods seven days a week.
After all, where do you think I’ll be spending my two days a week off?
