The past few days I’ve been watching quite a few movies (there will be a separate post on what those movies were), but one of the films was Casablanca. I know the movie is considered a classic and I’ve seen many clips from it over the years, but I don’t think I’ve ever watched the entire film.
All I can say is, I’m glad I finally did. It lived up to its hype; it was wonderful.
But this post is about music…
When I heard the song “It Had to Be You” played by Sam, I thought I might write about that song, since it had long been a favorite, from when I first heard it in the movie Annie Hall. The song has appeared in 19 films and TV shows, and it finished as #60 in AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema.
Since I love such rankings, I had to see what other songs made the list, and it was there that I saw that As Time Goes By from Casablanca was number two. So I felt I had to go with it for this post. Plus, this is the song associated with the iconic line, “Play it, Sam”.
Here is Sam singing As Times Goes By…
By the way, if you want to test your willpower, try and scroll through that list of 100 songs without singing one of the tunes listed – I’d say it’s impossible. And you may also be curious as to what song was ranked number one…
