One of the hottest memes on the Internet today is the Mannequin Challenge.
If you haven’t heard of it, the idea is simple. Everyone freezes in place, forming a complex tableau, and then someone takes a video of it. If you prefer, set it to music. Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles” is a clear favorite.

But all I know is that I witnessed this challenge probably 30 years ago when I first started teaching.
As soon as I walked into a classroom and started talking debits and credits, the students would sit in their chairs like mannequins for the rest of the class.
If only I had thought to videotape such an experience, and then set it to music, I could have been an Internet phenomenon, even before the Internet existed…
