Music Monday: And the Winner Is…

While last night’s Academy Awards were overshadowed by some shameful behavior, there were some wonderful moments.

I was happy to see CODA win two Oscars, one for Best Movie and one for Best Supporting Actor, Troy Kotsur.

Kotsur, who is deaf, was greeted with silent applause, as shown in the video below:

a great moment, for sure.

Since this is a music post, I thought I would also share the song that won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The winner was Billie Eilish for her theme song for the 25th James Bond film, No Time to Die.

I don’t know much about Eilish’s work, so I went to old faithful, Wikipedia, to learn a bit more. Here’s a quick summary:

Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell (what a great name) born December 18, 2000, is an American singer-songwriter. She first gained public attention in 2015 with her debut single “Ocean Eyes”. The song was written and produced by her brother, Finneas O’Connell, with whom she frequently collaborates on music and in live shows. Her commercially successful debut extended play Don’t Smile at Me (2017) charted in the top 15 in numerous countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

Eilish’s first studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019), debuted atop the US Billboard 200 and UK Albums Chart. It was one of the best-selling albums of 2019, buoyed by the success of its fifth single, “Bad Guy”, Eilish’s first number-one on the US Billboard Hot 100. The following year, she co-wrote and performed the theme song “No Time to Die” for the James Bond film of the same name, which topped the UK Singles Chart and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2022 (I love how up-to-date Wikipedia often is). Her subsequent singles “Everything I Wanted”, “My Future”, “Therefore I Am”, and “Your Power” each peaked in the top 10 in the US and UK; her second studio album, Happier Than Ever (2021), reached number one in 25 countries

Eilish has received several accolades, including seven Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, one Guinness World Record, three MTV Video Music Awards, three Brit Awards, a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award. She is the youngest artist in Grammy history and second overall to win all four general field categories—Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year—in the same year. She was featured on Time magazine’s inaugural Time 100 Next list in 2019 and the Time 100 in 2021. According to the RIAA and Billboard, Eilish is the 26th-highest-certified digital singles artist and one of the most successful artists of the 2010s.

Not bad for a 21-year old…

  1. I saw a recent interview that Troy Kotsur gave, and I walked away with a very favorable opinion of him. I’m guessing you saw CODA. We don’t go to the movies that often, but I haven’t seen any of the films most years.

    1. He does seem like he has a good sense of humor.

      I did see CODA and thought it was great. I wrote a post about it about 10 days ago about how it brought me to tears. We watched it fromt he comfort of our home… 🙂

  2. Wow! I can see why she won. Thanks for sharing it. I heard that Reba gave a very moving performance. And I thought about you when I heard about Coda winning.
    As far as the “unfortunate event” that happened that you referred to, shameful is right! And that word covers it!

    1. it is a good song, and she seems to be quite the talent. I’ll have to look for Reba’s performance. I wonder if there will be any repercussions from the unfortunate event…

  3. Will Smith should win the Oscar for best overacting in a melodramatic role. He called it protecting his queen. He picked the worst possible way to do so. I’m glad CODA won Best Picture and will look for it in the theaters.

  6. Hi Jim, I don’t think Will Smith should have won an Oscar after his shameful behaviour. It send a very bad message to the world that you can behave like a spoiled brat with no self control and then get rewarded for it.

  9. If that dreary dirge is the best song I hate to think what the others were like! But I’ve never liked Billie Eilish, so maybe I’m biased. It was great to see Troy Kotsur win – those early days on Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye have stood him in good stead 😊

      3. It will probably come back at some point – most of the good series do. I haven’t read her book, but I thought it was a nice touch for the real Sue Thomas to play a small role in the series.

  11. in spite of the ugly actions of one, you are right, there were some wonderful highlights. I love billie’s voice, she sounds like a much more mature chanteuse. I cannot wait to see coda, I have heard nothing but raves about this film and I love that they won, along with the genuine joy in the lead actor winning.

  12. I don’t really know much about her music. But because she has Tourette Syndrome, people in my online community are talking about her constantly. From what I hear, she’s a super authentic person, and that alone makes me like her.
