Discovering the Village of Pewaukee. WI

This past Monday morning while I was busy catching up on the next episode of The Beverly Hillbillies, my phone rang and I glanced down to see whom it might be.

The caller ID simply said Village of Pewaukee. Since I had never heard of such a place, let alone know anyone from there, I let the phone ring until it stopped. If it was someone calling to see if I was free to be on The Tonight Show, they would leave a message. Alas, no message was left.

But I was intrigued.

Village of Pewaukee.

It had such a nice ring to it.

I had to find out more.

Like, where was it?

What kind of place was it?

What were housing prices like?

Could I get a job there?

Is it the kind of place I could retire to?

So many questions.

Fortunately, the Beverly Hills episode was over and I could start to get answers to some of my questions.

Here’s what I learned:

Location

Pewaukee is a village in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,166 at the 2010 census. It sits on the eastern end of Pewaukee Lake. It is about 20 miles west of Milwaukee and about 100 miles north of Chicago.

Job Market

The village of Pewaukee is home to one of the three locations of Dynex/Rivett Inc., a manufacturer of hydraulic components and systems. Pewaukee is also the home of Logic Design Corporation, the developers of Global Edge Engineering and Manufacturing Software. Another business located in Pewaukee is PM Plastics, a custom injection molding company.

The village is home to the Old Main Street building on Wisconsin Avenue. Opened in 2002 across from the beach on Pewaukee Lake, Old Main Street replicates the charm of a late 1800s building with modern up to date facilities. It is the home of small businesses that include restaurants (Seesters Mexican Cantina and The Chocolate Factory), a salon, Beach Bum bakery, a pilates/yoga/barre studio, a bead shop, a home builder, a construction management firm, a recruitment firm (Joel Frank & Associates), and a software company (Logic Design Corporation).

Education

Pewaukee School District serves both the village and the city of Pewaukee, Wisconsin. The district includes four separate buildings all contained in a single-campus environment. The school buildings serve early childhood through 2nd grades, 3rd through 5th, 6th through 8th, and 9th through 12th grades. I’m not sure what happened to kindergarten and 1st grade…

Waukesha County Technical College’s main campus is located in the village of Pewaukee, Wisconsin. The technical college is part of the 16 technical colleges that make up the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS).

Library

Since I consider local libraries the crown jewel of a community, I had to see what this town had. The Pewaukee Public Library is a joint library operated in conjunction with the City of Pewaukee. In addition to the usual list of library services, the library houses the Harken Astronomical Observatory.  This special feature provides education and brings the wonders of our incredible universe to families of the community.

Community Life:

The Village has several active community groups including:

  • Pewaukee Area Arts Council
  • Pewaukee Fireworks Committee
  • Pewaukee Kiwanis
  • Positively Pewaukee
  • Glacier Lakes Chapter of the Antiques and Classic Boat Society
  • Woman’s Club of Pewaukee

There is also a Pewaukee Lake public beach.

Real Estate

Zillow listed 20 homes for sale in the Village. I thought this one sounded the most appealing – a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo for $499,000 right on the lake. Here is the description:

Weather

In Pewaukee, the summers are warm and wet; the winters are freezing, snowy, and windy; and it is partly cloudy year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 15°F to 82°F and is rarely below -4°F or above 90°F.

Conclusion

The Village of Pewaukee looks like a wonderful place with its lakefront location and small-town atmosphere. Except for the weather, it would be the kind of place I’d consider retiring to.

Hopefully, someday I’ll get to visit the Village. And maybe find out who was calling me…

    1. I was wondering if anyone had ever been there. I’ve never thought of visiting Milwaukee, but after looking at the maps of Pewaukee and seeing that Milwaukee is right on the lake, its appeal immediately went up…

This reminds me of that Twilight Episode, where a man is on a commuter train that keeps stopping at a town called “Willoughby.” He looks out the window and sees a very pleasant looking village from a simpler, stress-free time. But in reality there is no such town. He’s hallucinating, while having a nervous breakdown from all the stress he gets at work. One day he jumps off the train, thinking he’s getting off at Willoughby, and is killed. Then his body is hauled away by a hearse bearing the name, “Willoughby and Son Funeral Home.”

    Should that town call again, I’d be cautious about answering the phone.

  5. We watched the Beverly Hillbillies tonight as well. But we didn’t get any spam calls.

    Way to make something good out of a spam call. 🙂 That would be a great view to wake up too! If I can’t get a beach house maybe I can get a lakehouse. But Wisconsin is too cold!

      and yes, it is a bit too cold…

      the only downside of a lakehouse somewhere warm is that there are likely alligators…

  7. Luckily Pewaukee got a hold of me. Their Village Idiot died and they are looking for a replacement. I am considering it because I lived in Milwaukee from 1958-1962. If I decide against it, I can put a good word in for you if you like.

  13. So, there’s a village called Peewaukee and a city called Peewaukee? But surely a population of 8000 is rather high for a village? Surely it’s a town? I’m intrigued now about the population of Peewaukee city, come to think of it, what causes a village to become a town or a town to become a city? Here in the U.K. it’s a religious thing, a city is a large town but with a cathedral. The smallest city in England is Wells, tiny, but with a strong historical connection to Bath, where once the Bishop of Bath & Wells was a bit of a lecher and pervert, famously portrayed in the Black Adder TV series. But I digress ……

    1. it is strange that there is a village and a city. I don’t know if the way we name places is as sophisticated as the U.K…
