Music Monday: It Was on the Tip of My Tongue for a Week

Somehow, I got the opening piano notes to a song stuck in my head last week, and I just could not think of what song they went with:

I tried humming the opening into Siri, but to no avail.

I scrolled through my playlist, it wasn’t any of those songs.

I mentally went through some of the songs of my favorite artists, but none of them seemed to fit the bill.

And then out of nowhere, a line from the song came back to me: “Soon be, like a man that’s on the run”.

So I searched for that phrase in Google, but the first song listed was a song by Run D.M.C., and I knew that wasn’t it. And surprisingly, none of the first 20 or so results looked familiar either.

So I then tried searching the phrase again, but this time with quotes around it.

And there it was.

From Now On, by Supertramp.

The song comes from the album Even in the Quietest Moments. which was the fifth album by the English rock band Supertramp, released in April 1977. Even in the Quietest Moments… reached number 16 on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart in 1977 and within a few months of release became Supertramp’s first Gold (500,000 copies or more) selling album in the US. In addition, “Give a Little Bit” became a US Top 20 single and reached number 29 on the UK Singles Chart. While “Give a Little Bit” was the big hit, both “Fool’s Overture” and the title track also got a fair amount of FM album-rock play. In 1978, Even in the Quietest Moments… was ranked 63rd in The World Critic Lists, which recognized the 200 greatest albums of all time as voted for by notable rock critics and DJs. (Wikipedia)

It was one of my favorite albums and I listened to it quite a bit during college. As noted above, there are several great songs on the album, but From Now On was one of my favorites.

According to Songfacts, the song is about a guy who doesn’t like his job, and spends a lot of time daydreaming to make up for the monotony of his everyday existence. It’s a feeling that I am sure many of us can relate to at certain times.

What a relief it was to figure out what the song was that kept playing over and over in my head.

Without further ado, here is the song. I usually prefer to share live versions, but the ones I found just did not do justice to the song. Plus, I love the album cover as well. Piano and sax – doesn’t get much better…

  1. I also was a Supertramp fan, but it was their Breakfast in America album that I played repeatedly. The brain is such a curious and fantastic instrument to suddenly retrieve something that we haven’t thought about for decades. Who knew it was stored in the long-term memory there someday, waiting to come out?

    1. it’s not a catchy tune, but I think it is a great one. perhaps because a piano and a sax are among my two favorite instruments. add a banjo, and I can’t control myself.

      and the lyrics do strike a chord…

  5. Supertramp was excellent back in the day and a trip down memory lane now. So many great songs like Dreamer, Take the Long Way Home, Bloody Well Right, The logical Song, and it just goes on and on.

  9. oh, I had forgotten about them, but I always enjoyed their music. it makes me crazy when I can’t name or place a song, and suddenly, voila! glad you solved this one and shared a bit of nostalgic music with us

  10. I was a Supertramp fan too. Crime Of The Century came out during my last year at uni and any band that could get a song banned by the BBC for including a swear word in its title was bound to go down well with students! Breakfast In America was my favourite of their albums.

  16. Really enjoyed the song- it was new to me. By the way, there’s this app called Shazam that helps you find the song from a small clip. It’s super helpful for moments like this when a song is stuck in your head and you just can’t think of what it is.

  17. I’m so pleased you solved your song problem. I have been trying to think of a song too, but haven’t been able to find it yet. I don’t have the correct lyrics. It was just something my friend said that sounded like the line of a song, but neither of us have been able to identify it. She tried singing it into her phone too (she is a singer, I wouldn’t have done any good) but no luck. Hopefully, one day it will come to us.
