Let the Summer Reading Begin!

I just finished teaching my final class of the summer today, and grades have been turned in.

That means it’s time to start reading.

For whatever reason, I don’t get much personal reading done during a semester, so I really look forward to the summer when I can make up for lost time.

I’m currently in the middle of reading Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield, a fictional retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae. The book is the last one to read of the five books I received on my last birthday from my family.

Once I finish this book, I think next on my list is the new John Grisham novel, Sooley, a fictional basketball story set at NC Central University.

From there, my three sons have once again supplied me with some books to read, this time for Father’s Day. The books include The Dome by Stephen King, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein, and Dark Matter by Blake Crouch.

Summer is already my favorite time of the year, and having some good books to read is just icing on the cake…

  4. Now you need to schedule a beach trip, for that is the best place for reading. 🙂
    I remember when I was a child keeping a notebook of all the books I read over the summer. The list was LONG! I did have fun in other ways too, but reading happened every day, and being able to read fast was a plus.

  7. Another connection we share—John Grisham. I have yet to read one of his books that left me unsatisfied. I read mostly his lawyer stories, but I know he has branched out and written in other genres. I don’t know if he still does it, but he coached little league baseball for a few years.

    1. I have been a fan of Grisham from the beginning, and I think I’ve read most of his books. One of my favorites outside the legal thrillers was Playing for Pizza. It really made me want to go to Italy…

      I had heard he was a big sports fan, so the coaching doesn’t surprise me…

      4. I will have to look up his books. Its funny because I have known of his books and always pass his books in the bookstore but…just have never picked up one. Now that Karen Kingsbury mentioned him and you and Pete did my curiosity has grown.:)

      14. There are too many to mention for me, Carolyn. But, I’m betting you may have seen one of his books that have been adapted into films. (The Chamber, The Client, A Painted House, The Pelican Brief, The Rainmaker, The Runaway Jury, Skipping Christmas, and A Time to Kill.)

  13. Yay, summer reading!!! I’m typically an avid reader but this pandemic has me in a long lull…. It’s been over a year, it’s not that I haven’t tried, somehow nothing has been able to keep me distracted from my fluctuating mental state)! I recently redecorated my Bookshelf and found some books I haven’t read and gave it a shot. Let me tell you lol, the first book I picked up in over a year is a book about a post apocalyptic world where a brother and sister are orphaned bc their parents were killed along with 98% of the world’s population due to a highly contagious and deadly virus…. 😱😭 It’s unclear to me why I do the things I do…..🤦‍♀️

      1. It’s been good so far, especially England beating Germany on Tuesday! Not a fan of the Tour, I prefer my sports drug free, but here I’d add cricket to that list – there’s a lot of it about at the moment!

      3. We get some NBA here, but I rarely watch it. Golf isn’t one of my top sports but The Open is always good to watch, especially when it’s a close finish.

      5. I’ve just checked and there’s an NBA game on here at present, but I’ll give it a miss as I’m watching an amazing match at Wimbledon. One of the channels on Sky Sports is dedicated to golf, so I could watch loads of that too, if the mood took me…

      7. Was that Kerber v Tormo? What a wonderful match, shame there had to be a loser. Here the BBC shows live on both main channels, and we get a choice of watching other courts via their red button service. They have lost the rights to broadcast so many sports events in recent years that they really make the most of this as their showpiece. I’m now on the Federer match – winner plays our Cameron Norrie next. In his post match interview Norrie was asked for his thoughts on it. He replied ‘come on Gasquet!’

      8. I was watching the Kerber match, and had to leave before it ended. When I left, Tormo had just broken Kerber to make it 5-4. And as far as Norrie, this might be the year you want to play Federer…

      9. You only missed one game, but it was of the same standard as the rest of the match. Maybe, and I’m sure Norrie believes he has a chance, but Federer looked pretty useful today.

  17. As a fellow teacher, I also take the summer a chance to unwind and read lots of books! I’ve recently fallen down a Terry Pratchett rabbit hole and I’m loving it! 🐢🐘🐘🐘🐘

      1. The Colour of Magic is a great place to start. It took me a while to tune in to his writing style, but well worth it!
