Some Unusual Phobias

I could have put a number in my headline, like “23” or “17”, but I wasn’t in the mood for clickbait 🙂

I came a cross a link from Prevention Magazien the other day titled “29 Weird Phobias That Really Do Exist“, but it was one of those articles that each of the phobias was a on a different page. So that inspired me to look for something similar on another site, and I discovered that there is no shortage of such articles.

to name just a few.

So I decided to explore many of these sites and compile my own list, of just the nine phobias that seemed the most unusual, since nine is my favorite number.

  • Chorophobia: Fear Of Dancing (I may pull this one out at the next wedding I attend…)
  • Arachibutyrophobia: Fear Of Peanut Butter Sticking To The Roof Of (given how much peanut butter I eat, I’d be in trouble if I had this phobia)
  • Deipnophobia: Fear Of Dinner Conversations (I don’t know if it’s a fear of dinner conversations, or just the fear ofpeople realizing I have nothing interesting to say)
  • Nomophobia: Fear of being without your mobile phone (I’m OK for an hour or so…)
  • Globophobia: Fear of balloons (no self-respecting clown could admit to this)
  • Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia: Fear of long words (whoever came up with the name ofr this one really likes to rub it in)
  • Omphalophobia: Fear of belly buttons (I might have this one; I can’t touch my own belly button)
  • Dextrophobia: Fear of having objects to your right (don’t worry, there is one for fear of objects on your left side – levophobia, but I am not going to count that in my list of none phobias.
  • Aulophobia: Fear of flutes (I wonder if it’s because of teir association with rats, thanks to the Pied Piper of Hamelin)

  2. The problem with most of these phobias is I wouldn’t know what they were about except for your definitions. Fear of flutes? Why is that funny to me? What about “statophobia?” The fear of a downturn in your WordPress stats.

  4. I wonder if people get paid to think up the names for these fears. That would be a job that could induce nightmares and a few fears for sure. Perhaps a fear of not using enough letters in naming a fear.

  5. For most of my life I had issues about my belly button being touched… a real primal thing. I seriously felt an instinct to kill people who tried to touch it. One day, within the past few years, I realized the fear/hangup was gone. No idea what changed!!

  6. This was very entertaining, Jim! It made me stop and think about what my phobias are. Oddly, I could not think of one. Now I wonder if I have ‘unknownfearaphobia’. The fear of not knowing what you fear.

  7. I am always fascinated by these, and I need to find one that covers a person’s fear that I might try to dance and they would have to be a witness to it. let me know what you find – )

  10. My phobias are people who talk using acroynms I don’t want to hear words like ‘ASAP’ or the cute little acronym someone made up because they are too lazy to say the long winded name of a product!

  11. Giving names for phobias just encourages people to have them. But since yours has a name I have decided to be sympathetic and given you a ‘like’.

      3. Haha! Like the math adding up in how long I am going to have to wait for a beach house. I don’t like the math in that. Doesn’t balance out how I think it should!

  15. Forget Deipnophobia, I loathe, abominate, hate the sound of people eating. My Misphonia (sp) takes care of that whole dining with other people thing. I’d just as soon starve.

  16. 🤣🤣😭 The alll sound made-up it’s so nuts but I kind of believe it… The part that is unbelievable is that there’s likely a group of ppl out there who were paid to invent these words and put an official (medical?) description together? Lol… Not denying ppl can have phobias of this sort… But when you think about it the world is limitless on things ppl can be afraid of…

  17. When I think of phobias, not too many come to light. However, at my advanced age, there is no sense in taking a chance climbing a tall ladder. At least, I clicked “Like” to keep Mr. Borden healthy and wise.

  18. Nomophobia: is king here apparently… when I was in the hairdressers the other week a young man came in and when he was seated in the chair to have his hair washed he was still on his albeit held aloft phone to stop it getting wet…My grandson seemed to think that was normal…sigh
