Say Hello to the Newest Member of the Borden Family

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about how we had say goodbye to our 2003 Buick Rendezvous.

Since that time, we have been looking for a replacement car. I wanted to follow the advice I learned (a little late), that you should never buy a new car, and you should not borrow to buy a car. This is from a financial perspective; I realize there are other reasons people may like to buy a new car.

Our search led us to our local mechanic, someone we have known and trusted for over 20 years. He happened to have a used car for sale, one he referred to as a zipper car (at least that’s what I think he was saying). I took it to mean a car that was ideal for zipping around from place to place.

The car was a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid with 127,000 miles on it.

While that may seem like a lot of mileage, I compared it to our other car, which coincidentally is also a 2006, a Toyota Matrix. We bought that car seven years ago, and it had 133,000 miles on it when we bought it. Today, it has nearly 225,000. So the mileage on the Honda didn’t bother us.

We took it for a test drive, and it seemed fine. So we did a bit of research and the car seemed to have good reviews.

Plus, we were excited about the idea of having a hybrid.

So we took the plunge this week, and now we are proud owners of a 2006 Honda Civic.

I’m hoping we get 300,000 miles out of it.

And we still have to give it a name…

  4. Nice choice! Best of luck with the new addition to the Borden family. Did they give a cute blanket to wrap it in when you brought it home? 😊

    Cars are made much better than they used to be. My car is a 2007. I plan to keep it for a few more years. While styles don’t change much and cars last much longer now, technology changes every year. My son’s car is an inexpensive model but it has a backup camera! I’d really like to have one of those one day.

    1. I agree. Older cars, from the outside, still look great. And they run fine too. It’s the little gadgets that you miss out on. This new car of ours does not have a bluetooth radio, and I really grew to like that for hone calls, driving directions, and music. We may put in a new radio; that’s what we did with the 2006 Matrix…

      I also like those backup cameras…

  5. I wish you well to drive it. I have a different take on buying cars as I’ve always bought new. I’ve only once paid cash for a car but have not been in the financial position since then to do so. But my car is the only one we have financed and it’s a monthly expense we live with.

  7. Congrats on the new (to you) car! I think you made a wise choice as Hondas are known for their longevity and quality. I hope it becomes a reliable and beloved member of the Borden troop. And may it always get you and yours where you are going with the utmost safety. I do not usually name my vehicles as I like to maintain some emotional distance. I do not want either one of us to be heartbroken when I trade her in for a younger, prettier model down the road.

  15. I had company cars for a while then when that scheme ended I bought a brand new car. Will never do that again! I’m about to sell my current car for something that’s a little less extortionate to run and maintain. It’s probably going to be a Kia Sportif (don’t know if you have those, I’m in UK) – I need boot space as I’m moving house soon. This time it’ll be 3-4 years old.

  18. Congratulations on your new car. I love hybrids. I’ve had several. My 2006 Toyota died several years ago. It had 217,000 miles on it. I had replaced the battery and then the engine went out on it. I did not want to put any more money into it. We spend tons of money on our cars no matter what we have. I have a 2018 Toyota Prius Prime right now. It has about 45,000 miles on it and we can practically drive it for free – no service work, no gas (most of the time). We have filled up the tank two or three times in nearly five months here in Prescott. We lease a lot of cars- we leased a Fiat 500E for three years at a total cost of $3,600, no down payment because of the incentives. It went 80 miles on a charge, no gas, not service. We had to replace one tire in the three years we had it at a cost of $100, and that was our total cost of driving it for three years. We own the Prius and just leased a Jeep which we can carry our e-bikes on, It will cost us a little more, but again, no service and fairly low payments – nothing beats the Fiat, though.     1. thanks, Marsha, for the good wishes. It’s good to know that you have liked your hybrid car and have had success with them. This is our first one, so hopefully we have the same experience. It sounds like you do your homework before buying a car – and that work has paid off!

      3. I think so. My sister-in-law drives our second Prius. My brother bought a Prius about a year after I bought my first one, and he still drives it. But I think Hondas are just as good. I’ve had one or two of them in my family.
