A Mother’s Income and the Length of Their Child’s Ring Finger vs Index Finger

Last year I wrote a post: What Your Fingers Reveal About You that looked at the claim that the relative size of your pointer (index) finger vs. your ring finger revealed a lot about your personality.

Since my index finger is longer than my ring finger, here is what that meant for my personality:

Men with these hands are very confident and can even be a little narcissistic. These people have no trouble being alone often and don’t like being disturbed. When it comes to love, they do not venture out there a lot. They’re not the ones to make the first move.

So I was curious when I saw the following headline: The ‘2D:4D’ ratio: How a child’s finger length could be indicative of mom’s income level.

This research, out of Swansea University in the United Kingdom, found that babies born to low-income mothers tend to have longer index fingers than ring fingers. Conversely, kids born to high-income moms usually have longer ring fingers.

The logic for such a finding?

Well, a longer index finger is a female characteristic indicating higher estrogen levels and a longer ring finger is generally a male trait synonymous with high testosterone levels. Researchers theorize that low-income mothers feminize their children in the womb and high-income mothers masculinize their kids. The researchers say the apparent relationship between mom’s income and hormone levels is likely an unconscious evolutionary response on the mother’s part. Its intention may be to give the children the best odds of reproducing one day.

I guess this implies I was born to a low-income mom who tried to feminize me…

By the way, if you are curious about the 2D:4D ratio, scientists refer to the relationship between the length of a person’s index and ring fingers as the 2D:4D ratio. Its implications have been the subject of scientific debate for some time. Researchers say over a thousand studies have examined the 2D:4D ratio.

So given that there are over 1,000 studies on the 2D:4D ratio, and I’ve only written two posts about such a ratio, I’ve got a lot of material for future posts…

  3. I don’t know what to think about this post. All I can tell you is it reminded me of the episode of Seinfeld when George becomes a hand model.

I wonder if there is any study that shows if having one finger longer than the other makes any difference inyour ability to play the guitar What if we found that all great guitar players had an index finger longer than their ring finger. Would be guitar players would probably go in for some plastic surgery…

      1. I’d guess that having long fingers is good for guitar players, rather than my short fat ones, and a longer index finger would probably be an advantage. With punk musicians they could study their middle fingers…

  9. A curious question to ponder. Until I read this post, I haven’t paid much attention to the lengths of my index and ring fingers (index is longer). When I was growing up, I hoped for bigger hands and longer fingers . . . dreaming of playing basketball with a perfect pair of hands.
