It Took 23 Posts, But It Finally Happened

Posts featuring Dan Pink’s Pinkcast videos have been a mainstay of my blog for the past year and a half. In fact, this is my 23rd such post.

The first 22 posts included topics such as:

In each one, I was a big fan of the message Dan was trying to get across.

However, I cannot say the same thing for his latest Pinkcast, released today. He refers to it as how to make the perfect pandemic lunch.

The video starts off strong, putting peanut butter on a piece of bread, but then it goes quickly downhill after that.

Next comes pickles. Are you serious? I can’t think of anything more disgusting to put on a peanut butter sandwich (or any sandwich for that matter).

Then he tops it off with Sriracha sauce. Now I don’t mind Sriracha sauce, but mixed with peanut butter and pickles is a waste of the sauce.

So, using the advice from one of Dan’s previous posts about giving feedback, here’s what I want to say to Dan:

“I’m giving you these comments because I have very high expectations and I know that you can reach them.”

Here’s the video:

  1. Ewww that sounds awful although I will say that peanut butter mixed with sriracha tastes really good with thai dishes. Not in a sandwich with pickles though that sounds disgusting.

      1. I can eat PB by itself, but I also like it with jelly. Which I guess to some people sounds odd, but to me a PB&J is one of the all-time classic sandwiches…

  2. Dan’s a good speaker. Does he ever do humor? This feels like one of those shock value videos designed to get a reaction out of people.

      1. I do put just about anything on peanut butter, but I would never consider pickles. When we grew up, we put sliced bananas on peanut butter, but most people have never heard of that and think it’s bizarre.

  3. Perfect Pandemic lunch, eh? No, thank you. I would rather have a perfect normal lunch in a world with no pandemic, if this is what I’d be having for lunch everyday. Perhaps this is a way to motivate people to help solve the pandemic crisis. “Cure Covid, or eat this everyday.” I’d get to finding a cure, even if I ain’t in the medical profession.

  4. Well, I cannot agree with the majority here. I have eaten a PB and pickle sandwich, and although the combination sounds gut wrenching, it is actually quite delicious. I would recommend a good dill spear as the partner. The dill and vinegar give a noticeable snap to the texture and creaminess of the PB. PB also goes good on a hot dog, just saying…. Adding the siracha would be a leap for me, but for those who like a little heat, I am sure it works together. Don’t knock it till you have tied it. I have eaten a lot of things worse, for sure! Fun post, Jim!

    1. Dan does mention specifically using bread and butter pickles, whatever they are. And also notes you should NOT use dill pickles 🙂

And peanut butter on a hot dog might have been a bit more bearable when I ate meat, but I would have still struggled to take that first bite.

I’m glad I am an adult so I can say “no” when someone asks me to try something! 🙂

      1. You don’t know what bread and butter pickles are? Jim, you are leading a sheltered life. I would argue that dill pickles work as well, but I can see were the less tart B&B pickles would work well too. The are a PA Dutch staple, Jim. You need to cross that off your bucket list!

    2. So a PB with pickles ain’t that bad? Don’t knock it ’till you actually tried it, eh? I like experimenting tastes with food, so if I do get the ingredients, I’ll give this sandwich a try.

  5. i like my peanut butter on a spoon or in a reese’s peanut butter cup. i love pickles. i love sriracha on lots of things. maybe he was going for the pickled flavor, like in korean kimchi, the peanut taste, like in thai cooking, and the sauce which goes on everything. spread that all on a. piece of bread, as americans do with most anything, and you’ve got a sandwich! sometimes the oddest combos make the perfect mix –

  6. I would’ve stopped at the peanut butter. I’d never heard of sriracha sauce and now that I know what it is, I know that I’d never have it. Chillies and I don’t mix, and I’m not keen on pickles either. I’m happy for you to tell Dan just what you think.

    1. I’m with you with just peanut butter on the bread (although some jelly would be fine as well). And I do like Sriracha sauce.
But if I can go the rest of my life without ever eating a pickle, I’d be a happy man… 🙂

  7. I’ve never understood the American obsession with adding other things to peanut butter to make a sandwich: leave it alone! Though given that what you and we use the word ‘jelly’ for is rather different, I do always like the image I have of you guys biting into a sandwich and oozing fruity gelatinous dollops all over the place.

But….pickles? The word ‘gross doesn’t come close to doing justice to it…

    1. PB&J is one of my all time favorite sandwiches; I even wrote an homage to it for one of my blog posts.

But yes, pickles and PB is gross.

To clear your mind of such a disgusting image, how about PB and chocolate – that’s a winning combo!

      1. Sorry, but nothing you’ve said changes my view: anything other than neat peanut butter is just weird. There are chocolate bars that contain peanuts, and there are chocolate covered nuts, so maybe…

      1. Preferably home made. And baked on the left side of the oven. Ah! The aromatic notes of blackberry and grapefruit on the tongue as it wafts in the kitchen redolent of Tuscan ovens and baked hillsides of wild thyme.

  8. PB and jam(jelly) is a definite no for me…Watching the video my initial thought as you told us the combo was yuk…however, I love bread and butter pickles and siracha so I am now erring on the I will have to try it side 🙂 Have a great weekend 🙂

    1. well let me know what you think if you give it a try.

It’s funny that the impact that culture has on food choices; I can’t imagine anyone not liking PB&J, but it seems there are several people outside the U.S. who want no parts of it! 🙂
