“Who Works Out In Six Minutes?”

It’s one of my favorite clips from the movie “There’s Something About Mary”.

Ben Stiller picks up a hitchhiker, and his passenger begins to tell him about his idea for the next great exercise video = “7 Minute Abs”. He tells Stiller that if someone goes into a store and sees a video for 8 Minute Abs and right beside it is a video for 7 Minute Abs, everyone will pick the 7 Minute Abs video

Stiller then asks the hitchhiker what would happen if somebody came out with a 6 Minute Ab video.

It’s at that point that the hitchhiker starts to get a bit rattled, and tells Stiller that such an idea is ridiculous.

Here’s the clip:

I thought of this video while I was reading an article in The New York Times about six-minute workouts.

The story contains videos for three different, full-body workouts, each of which can be completed in six minutes.

I watched each workout, and they look like a nice change of pace from my usual workout recently which has been 30 minutes on an exercise bike. So I think I’m going to give these workouts a shot for at least the next two weeks to see if they are effective. I plan to work out six days a week, which means I’ll be cycling through each video twice a week.

I’ll report back in a couple of weeks with my impressions of the workouts.

One final note, and it’s a bit ironic.

The workouts were created in partnership with Chris Jordan, Director of Exercise Physiology at Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute.

Jordan is also the creator of the widely-known 7 Minute Workout… I guess Stiller was on to something…

  1. Who works out in six minutes? Likely, the same people who write stories in six words. All kidding aside, if done consistently, I can’t imagine they won’t have an impact on overall physical fitness. You may still need the bike on occasion to maintain your aerobic fitness. Looking forward to your updates report. What are you going to do with all that extra time in a day?

    1. well played with the six-word stories! šŸ™‚

I just finished my first one; it wasn’t too bad. I am sure it will do something for my fitness. I’m thinking about using the extra time to really study my stats… šŸ™‚

  2. I think daily six minute work outs will make a difference, Jim. I do my exercises for about 10 minutes every day and I am walking 5 000 steps a day and I am passably healthy, I think. I can’t go back to manic exercise as I just don’t have the interest any more.
