From Nation to Neighborhood: Crisis Brings Out the Best in People

We were out walking our dog in between raindrops today, and we came across the Little Free Library stand shown above, one of a couple in our neighborhood.

But as you can see, this one doesn’t just have books. It has something that is in limited supply, with seemingly unlimited demand. For someone to sacrifice their toilet paper to a complete stranger (or a neighbor, who knows), speaks volumes about what people are doing to help each other during these trying times.

Such wonderful gestures are taking place all around the world, sometimes on a much bigger scale. This past Thursday at 8:00 pm, residents of the UK gave a big applause (from front doors, garden, balcony, windows, living rooms, etc) to show all nurses, doctors, GPs and carers our appreciation for their ongoing hard work and fight against the virus. The event was billed as Clap for Carers.

I’m sure most of us have seen a video or two of all the music that people have created and shared during the covid-19 pandemic.

When I see things like this, I am confident that we will come out of this crisis stronger, kinder, united, and more caring.

The song below, inspired by a post from Jill Dennison, says it so well.

Be well.

    1. that is awful you cannot go for walks even. people let their fears override common sense sometimes. walking and fresh air is key to good immunity/health. hope they let you out soon.

  1. Crisis (and fear) brings out both the best and worst in people, for sure. Thanks for sharing. When “they” take away (safe, social distancing) walks outdoors I fear “they” have gone too far and everyone’s health and immunity will suffer.
Fresh air is so important to both mental and physical health.
    Stay well.

  3. A lovely post, Jim. My boys and I have started a YouTube channel for kids who need some entertaining. I am trying to post two recipes and two stories a week.

    1. I should have read this comment first, since in my last comment I asked what kind of YouTube channel you were starting. I have not read your blog posts for today yet; do you provide the link to their YouTube channel?
