Music Monday: Music from the Streets of Singapore

I love street performers of all kinds, but especially jugglers and musicians.

Fortunately, when it comes to musicians, Singapore has not disappointed (I’m still keeping an eye out for jugglers…)

Right across the street from our apartment there is a large outdoor gathering space at the intersection of three malls. So far, we have come across three performers:

And this past Friday night we were walking next to one of the local hawker centers (outdoor food markets) when we came across a free outdoor concert taking place.

We caught two of the acts, and at least for the two we saw, background video seemed to be a big part of the performance. The songs were in a different language (Chinese perhaps), but it was still quite enjoyable, proving that music is indeed the universal language. We also noticed that a few members of the crowd went up and presented some sort of gift to the performers; not really sure what it was. And while the songs were in a different language, when they were finished, the two performers both said, in English, “Thank you very much”.

I may write another Music Monday about the music in Singapore, perhaps about the music played in some of the retail outlets as well as what some of the top songs are on local radio stations.

We continue to fully enjoy everything we have experienced in Singapore, and look forward to more adventures.

  1. I am glad you are enjoying the local culture and music. And, yes, music is a truly universal language. Maybe you should plan a small juggling performance at one of the venues, as there seems to be an untapped market there. 😁

  5. Very cool that you can experience Singapore with your family! Thanks for sharing some of the music! Love music from around the world. You are right, you don’t have to understand the language to be able to enjoy it. Music is universal, just like smiles. 🙂

    1. thanks, Joy (I hope that is your first name!). And I had the same thoughts about smiles, in fact, that was going to be the topic of one of my future posts! Nice to know I wasn’t just imagining it!

      1. You are welcome. Joy is my middle name and that is fine! Carolyn is my name, but you can use either one and than some say JR. I will go by whatever I am called. LOL!
