Music Monday: Some of My Favorite Christmas Songs (and THE Worst)

I was waiting for the Monday closest to Christmas to put this post together, which consists mostly of combining a couple of my previous posts about my favorite Christmas songs, with some updates. I also came across a short post about the worst Christmas song ever, and decided to include that here as well.

So in a way, it’s sort of like a mixed tape.

Last year, I wrote that my favorite Christmas song is “Oh, Holy Night”, and I shared links to several versions of the song. Some readers responded by alerting me to other versions, and I have updated that post to reflect those suggestions. I also came across a version I have not heard before, courtesy of Supernatural Hippie’s wonderful web site.

Here is the link to that updated post if you are so inclined to listen to 13 versions of “Oh Holy Night”.

I’ll include the Josh Groban version here in case you don’t feel like checking them all out:

I also wrote a post last year about the Killers, who released an original Christmas song/music video each year from 2006-2016, with the profits going to support the Product RED campaign to end AIDS.

Here is the link to that post, and I’ll include my favorite one here, Christmas in L.A.:

And as far as the worst Christmas song ever, according to Commonplace Fun Facts, it’s “Wonderful Christmastime” by Paul McCartney. Some critics have even gone so far as to label it the worst song ever recorded, Christmas or otherwise.

Despite the designation, the 1980 song earns McCartney $400,000 to $600,000 each year in royalties, placing his cumulative earnings from the number in excess of $20 million.

I guess there’s money to be had from bad writing, and that means my blog’s got a chance…

  1. Amazing version there of “Oh Holy Night” by Josh Groban. Never heard that Killers song. I am a big Owen Wilson fan. Was that a movie? Was it called Christmas in LA? Or was he just in the video? If it was a movie I will have to watch it. 🙂 I like the Paul McCartney song too. 🙂

  2. Jim, you give me a reason not to hate Mondays completely. I look forward to your Music Monday posts and this one did not disappoint. I was surprised to hear that “Wonderful Christmastime” was so disliked. No one told that to radio stations because it still gets tons of air play.

  3. Ok, “Wonderful Christmastime” may be schleppy, but still Worst Ever, Huh? Hands down Worst for me: “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”. Creeps me out, Jim. “Silver Bells” and “Little Drummer Boy” if I had to pick only two.

  4. I’m a huge Beatles’ fan, but I have to say I agree about ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ – it’s simply awful, as though McCartney was simply going through the motions of writing a Christmas number. I feel the same about EJ’s ‘Step Into Christmas’. What WERE they thinking? That aside – a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you!
