Music Monday: What Do Musicians Have Against Monday?

Probably more than any other day of the week, Monday is picked on by musical artists.

We don’t need to be reminded that it is our least favorite day of the week, and putting such thoughts into lyrics doesn’t really change such sentiments. In fact, listening to such songs may just amplify our feeling of dread for the first day of the workweek.

Now that Monday is almost over, I thought it would be OK to share some songs about Monday, starting with a few less than upbeat tunes, and ending with a couple of songs that are a bit more optimistic about this most dreaded of days.

Manic Monday by The Bangles

It’s just another manic Monday
I wish it was Sunday
‘Cause that’s my fun day

Monday Monday by The Mamas and the Papas

Every other day, every other day
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Monday comes, but whenever Monday comes
A-you can find me cryin’ all of the time

I Don’t Like Mondays by The Boomtown Rats

Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I want to shoot
The whole day down

Rainy Days and Mondays by The Carpenters

Hangin’ around
Nothin’ to do but frown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down

Enough with the whining about Monday. Fleetwood Mac didn’t seem to be too bothered by it.

Monday Morning

Monday morning you sure look fine
Friday I got travelin’ on my mind

But leave it to Jimmy Buffett to put the most positive spin on Monday in one of his classic songs. The video below features a cool intro to the song by Jimmy.

Come Monday

Come Monday It’ll be all right,
Come Monday I’ll be holding you tight.

Happy Monday! Friday is just four days away…

  1. Have you considered songs from the other end of the week? Off the top of my head I can think of quite a few celebrating Friday or the weekend.

    1. thanks for sharing such a relevant story. I’d have to say Monday is my least favorite day of the week, but I don’t think it causes me any anxiety. That’s a shame to hear such high numbers. And yes, artists are very good at tapping into such emotions, so I would not be surprised if there are songs about such anxiety.
