The Streak Continues, It’s Just HST

We landed in Hawaii yesterday afternoon, and it’s been an action packed 33 hours so far.

We’ve gone to a secluded beach in Kona,

walked to Coconut Island (where part of the opening credits for Gilligan’s Island was filmed – here’s the Professor and Maryann),

swam with sea turtles,

and watched the sunset from the world’s tallest mountain, Mauna Kea*.

We’re fortunate to have a couple of locals (our middle son and his girlfriend) show us all these gems. He’s lived on the Big Island for five years now and has gotten to know many special places on the island that are off the beaten path.

And we’ve still got 12 days left.

I plan to keep writing while I’m here, but I’m on HST (Hawaii Standard Time) now. So even though it may be 5:00 Wednesday morning back home, it’s only 11:00 Tuesday night where I am, so in my mind, my streak continues.

* Mauna Kea has an altitude of 4,205 meters (13,796 feet) – much lower than Mount Everest. However, Mauna Kea is an island, and if the distance from the bottom of the nearby Pacific Ocean floor to the peak of the island is measured, then Mauna Kea is “taller” than Mount Everest. Mauna Kea is over 10,000 meters tall compared to 8,850 meters for Mount Everest – making it the “world’s tallest mountain.”
