How My Twitter Following Went from 250 to 253 in Just One Week!

It wasn’t easy, but I did it.

I recently increased my Twitter following by over 1% in just one week, and I want to share my secrets with you. Sharing these secrets will likely upset some social media gurus, who charge large sums of money for such information. But like a true academic, I believe in sharing what I learn with the larger community.

Here are the four steps I took:

First, I consistently tweet useful content everyday by sharing my favorite stories from the Wall Street Journal, because I know most people are fascinated by the inner workings of the Federal Reserve and nonstop criticism of President Obama.

Second, I create amazing original content everyday via my blog, and then tweet links to that content. One of my posts actually got five likes in Facebook!

Third, I use popular hashtags like #PleaseFollowMe and #OnMyWayto500Followers.

Fourth, when I tweet I make sure that I mention people who have a large number of followers, like @garyvee and @AnnaKendrick47, even if the tweet has nothing to do with them. By doing so, there is a good chance that such people will start following me and will retweet my pithy tweets to their million plus followers.

So there you have it, the keys to my Twitter success.

You may think that going from 250 to 252 followers (someone just unfollowed me!) is not that big a deal, but if I can continue to increase my followers by 1% each week, a quick calculation using Excel reveals that I will be up to a whopping 704 followers in just two years (actually it’s 703.66, but I took the liberty of rounding that number up).

By using the suggestions noted above, you too should see a slow, but steady, increase in your Twitter followers as well.

As I said earlier, I am happy to share this info with you at no cost. All I ask in return is that you #PleaseFollowMe @jimborden.

And hopefully the response won’t be so overwhelming  that it brings back the dreaded FailWhale

  1. You are truly a social media guru. I believe you now have to shave your head and add webinars and YouTube videos to your site. It’s compulsory. How’s your Klout score?

This post made me laugh, but it’s amazing how many people don’t understand that you might pick up some followers by naming big names in a tweet, especially if you say something relevant to that person’s followers or share a link to something that would interest them too. I’m not sure if Anna Kendrick will be that helpful, mind you. 😉

  2. Hi Sarah, if that’s what it takes to be a social media guru, count me out. Sounds like too much work!

As to mentioning some big names, I’m just hoping it’s a numbers game and a bit of luck. If I mention them often enough, they just might come across one of my tweets. Anna Kendrick may not be too helpful, but it sure would give me something to talk about for a few days!
